About this tool

A percentage calculator answers the three questions people ask most often about percentages: what is X% of Y, X is what percent of Y, and the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers. Type your figures and the answer appears instantly - no formula to remember.

The three calculations

  • X% of Y - find a part of a total, like 15% of a ₦20,000 bill. Formula: (X ÷ 100) × Y.
  • X is what percent of Y - turn a part into a percentage, like a score of 42 out of 50. Formula: (X ÷ Y) × 100.
  • Increase or decrease - measure change between two values, like a price moving from 8,000 to 10,000. Formula: ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100.

Everyday uses

  • Working out discounts, tips, and service charges.
  • Converting test scores and survey results into percentages.
  • Tracking price changes, salary raises, or growth between two periods.

How to calculate a percentage by hand

To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number - so 20% of 250 is 0.20 × 250 = 50. To express one number as a percentage of another, divide and multiply by 100. This calculator does the arithmetic for you and rounds neatly, all in your browser with nothing sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate X% of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 2,000 is (15 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = 300. The first calculator does this automatically.

How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. A score of 42 out of 50 is (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.

How is percentage increase or decrease calculated?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Going from 8,000 to 10,000 is a 25% increase; the tool also tells you whether it is an increase or a decrease.

Does it handle decimals?

Yes. You can enter decimal values and the results are rounded to a few decimal places for readability.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
